The building

Mas de Bunyol is a restored country house, with an extraordinary characteristic which makes it unique in the world, it is placed inside a Wild Vulture Reserve. The Observatory has been built over the house and it is used as viewpoint to watch vultures at the feeding time, providing an amazing sight of our our Iberian Fauna. Its location, between Valderrobres and Beceite, makes it a privileged place. During the breakfast time, it is possible to watch through the windows how hundreds of vultures are arriving to Mas de Bunyol and taking positions over the surroundings trees waiting for the José Ramon’s, “buitreman”, arrival. For this reason, Mas de Bunyol is not only a place for staying but is also a real unique experience. In the evening, from our terrace, the rocks and mountains where vultures actually nest can be watched. With the possibility of watching them with our telescope. In the magic nights of the Matarranya region you can go up to our observatory and enjoy the starry firmament without light pollution.

Mas de Bunyol bird observation centre endeavours to be a learning experience, both unintrusive on and respectful of the lives of the birds carrying out their daily activities there. With this in mind, “golden rules” have been put in place.

Golden rules

Access to Mas de Bunyol is done through a 3km long forest path. Cars are parked in a suited hidden spot and easy walking path is walked afterwards.

5

The entrance to the Masia is done through a tunnel that connects the trek path with the house. This path is hidden to the view of the vultures, trying to minimize the impact over them.

5

After the bird watch, the exit of the Masia is done the same way it was done previously: through the trek path and in a respectful silence.

Mas de Bunyol is a sustainable building in the middle of the nature, with an efficiency and renewable energy based design. We highly encourage the visitors to help us keep the sustainability of the project and the philosophy.

During the bird watch period, starting at very first time in the morning (around 7am) and until all vultures are gone (around 1pm), it is strongly asked not to lean out of the windows. After the vultures are gone, there is no problem to enjoy to the maximum the benefits of the house.

How it works

The entrance to the Masia is done through a tunnel that connects the trek path with the house. This path is hidden to the view of the vultures, trying to minimize the impact over them.

Moragrega, former electro-mechanic technician in the merchant marine, has been responsible of every energy system designed to make the stay guests as comfortable as possible. Mas de Bunyol is based on the model of sustainable rural tourism, and on a “Bed and Breakfast” basis. Mas de Bunyol is thought to create a family nearness atmosphere. All common areas are open spaces to keep an amplitude feeling. During winter time, it is a great pleasure to enjoy the warmth of our great fireplace (alma mater of the Masia). Breakfast is offered included in the price of the stay everyday of the year. We have thought of our place as a place where to enjoy of nature without giving up the advantages of civilization. We have put in practice in our project the idea of sustainable tourism with the aim of respecting our environment and make a sustainable use of our resources.
